Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO2e)

Carbon Dioxide Equivalent (CO2e) is a metric used to express the total impact of various greenhouse gases in terms of the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that would produce the same global warming effect. CO2e provides a standardised way to compare and aggregate the effects of different gases, making it easier to understand their overall contribution to climate change.

Each greenhouse gas has a specific Global Warming Potential (GWP), which quantifies how much heat it traps in the atmosphere compared to CO2. For example, methane (CH4) has a GWP of 25, meaning one ton of methane has the same warming effect as 25 tons of CO2. By converting all greenhouse gases into CO2e, organizations can more effectively measure, report, and manage their total greenhouse gas emissions.

CO2e is widely used in carbon accounting, emissions reporting, and climate policies to ensure a comprehensive approach to mitigating global warming and assessing environmental impacts.

The boTec Real-Time PCF solution enables the collection and management of CO2e data, supports comprehensive greenhouse gas accounting and reporting, and helps companies assess their environmental impact effectively.
